The Freedom Struggle:

 India is a country that is quite vast in size and population. It's not surprising that India became a British colony after the Battle of Plassey, which was fought on 23 June 1757.

The British rule lasted well over 200 years and during this time India was the world's largest and most valuable colony. The independence movement in India started with the first war of independence in 1857-1859 also known as "Indian Mutiny". This was one of many clashes between Indians and British troops that had been happening sporadically for decades but had never amounted to anything more than an annoyance for the ruling power. The last straw came when soldiers from the East India Company were going to be used in 1857 to help collect taxes from Indian peasants who were resisting by refusing to pay their taxes

The Role Of Women In India's Freedom Movement :

India's freedom struggle would have been incomplete without the contribution of women. Even though the status of Indian women in society was often lower than that of men, there were many instances during the Indian independence movement where these women took an active role.

The Indian freedom struggle was a long drawn out process and it involved all sections and communities of India. Women in India were also a vital part of this movement. They were not just spectators but took active part in India's fight for independence from British rule.

There are many examples of how woman activists played an important role in India's freedom struggle, which we discussed below:

1) Rani Lakshmi Bai:

  • Born: 19 November 1828
  • Died: 18 June 1858
  • Full name: Manikarnika Tambe

 She was the first freedom fighter of India in 1857 Revolution of Freedom. She was the Queen of Jhansi.

2) Sarojini Naidu: 

  • Born: 13 February 1879
  • Died: 2 March 1949
  • Full name: Sarojini Chattopadhyaya
  • Nicknames: Nightingale of India

She was a poet and a politician who became the first woman president of the Indian National Congress. She also became the first lady governor of a province of Independent India.

3) Kasturba Gandhi:

  • Born: 11 April 1869
  • Died: 22 February 1944
  • Full name: Kasturbai Makhanji Kapadia

She is the wife of Gandhiji and She tooks an active role in Freedom of India.

and some other women Freedom Fighter's are Kamala Nehru, Jhalkari Bai, Begum Hazrat Mahal, Kittur Rani Chennamma, Rani Gaidinliu, Matangini Hazra, Uda Devi, Moolmati, Aruna Asaf Ali, Kanaklata Barua, Tara Rani Shrivastava, Madam Bhikaiji Kama, Annie Besant, Captain Laxmi Sehgal, Ammu Swaminathan, Umabai Kundapur, Sucheta Kriplani, Kamaladevi Chattopadhay, Vijayalakshmi Pandit, Savitri Bai  Phule, Begum Royeka, Durga Bai Desmukh, etc.

Mahatma Gandhi:

  • Full name: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi
  • Born: 2 October 1869
  • Died: 30 January 1948

  • He was Lawyer, Leadership of the Campaign For the Independence of India from British Rule and Nonviolent Resistance. He became the 43rd President of Indian National Congress.
  • Gandhiji's First movement in the Champaran of Bihar in 1917. It is known as Champaran Satyagraha. 
  • The some movements are Kheda Satyagraha, Khilafat Movement, Non-co-operation movement, Salt Satyagraha,etc.

Netaji:

  • Full name: Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose
  • Born: 23 January 1897
  • Died: 18 August 1945

  • He became the President of Indian National Congress in 18 January 1938 and left Congress in 1939 and makes party Forward Bloc.
  • He is known for Indian Independence Movement.
  • Subhash Chandra Bose is the Founder of "Azad Hind Fauj" presently known as "Indian Army".
  • He gave the Slogan Like, "Jai Hind", "Chalo Dilli", "Tum mujhe khoon doh, mein tumhe Azadi Doonga ( Give me Blood, I will Give you Freedom").


Sardar Patel:

  • Full name: Sardar VallabhBhai JahverBhai Patel
  • Born: 31 October 1875
  • Died: 15 December 1950

  • He was the Indian Barrister and senior leader of the congress who played leading role in freedom movement for Independent India. He became the first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of India.
  • He leads many movements like Satyagarha in Gujarat, Fundamental Rights and Economic Policy, Quit India Movement,etc.

Chandra Shekhar Azad:

  • Real Name: Chandra Shekhar Tiwari
  • Born: 23 July 1906
  • Died: 27 February 1931
  • He was an Indian Revolutionary. He reorganised the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA).

Bahagat Singh:

Born: September 1907

Died: 23 March 1931
